One of the highlights of this year’s Fall Foliage Tour will be a visit to Bannerman Island in Beacon, New York, including a scenic boat cruise and walking tour of the island.

Bannerman Castle is an abandoned Scottish-style castle ruin located on 6.5-acre Pollepel Island in the Hudson River, approximately 50 miles north of New York City.

Built in the early 1900s by eccentric munitions merchant Francis Bannerman VI, the castle was never intended to be a royal residence or medieval fortress. Instead, the imposing structure was built as a giant, highly visible military-surplus warehouse, providing a secure location to store ammunition and weapons away from Manhattan.

Today, the hauntingly beautiful ruins are managed by New York State and preserved by the Bannerman Castle Trust.

  • Tour Includes a 30-minute boat ride to and from Bannerman Island aboard the Estuary Steward.
  • Guided 45-minute walking tour of the island to visit the famous Bannerman Castle ruins and gardens.
  • Visit to the Bannerman Garden and Bannerman Residence.

Tours go rain or shine. Please wear comfortable shoes as there is some rough terrain on the walking tour portion of the experience. Strollers cannot be accommodated. There are 72 steps to get from the dock to the historic trail and event space on Bannerman Island, they are not ADA accessible. Food and drinks are not included, but you can purchase snacks and souvenirs on Bannerman Island. (picnicking is allowed on Pollepel Island).

*Important Note - The DMA has pre-purchased 22 tickets in advance for Bannerman Island. They will be sold on a first‑come, first‑serve basis. Should all 22 tickets be purchased, we will attempt to acquire additional tickets for our tour time if more are needed, though availability is uncertain due to high seasonal demand and frequent sellouts during the fall tour period. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee additional tickets will be available.
